-exclusive charcoal Workshop In baugh’s Brooklyn studio-
- March 23-27, 2020 -
explore simple and advanced techniques in charcoal with Casey Baugh.
Charcoal has been dear to me for 25 years. The idea that burnt wood can be pressed into paper to create a face full of emotion has been my obsession since childhood. I picked up charcoal as a 10 year old and have been working with it ever since.
Charcoal was originally used as a preliminary to oil painting and therefore has been regarded as a medium to be covered or tossed aside. I believe there is a magic in the monochromatic medium that pulls at the mind like no other can. It has the ability to lay bold on the paper while also maintaining moments of pure subtlety.
Over the past 25 years I have worked extensively in charcoal and I am happy to now share all of the techniques I have learned.
This 5-day workshop will cover the various charcoal techniques I have learned as well as the full process of creating a work of art from an early idea to completion. We will be working from a live model and from photographs and exploring Light, Value, Composition, Edge, Surface and experimental textures and techniques.
Baugh will be demonstrating his techniques for the class as well as working one-on-one with students as they work.
Space is very limited and is expected to fill fast. The workshop will take place in Baugh’s studio in Williamsburg Brooklyn each day and is limited to 12 students.
