This 3-day workshop will cover all of Baugh’s charcoal techniques from beginning level to advanced.


This oil painting workshop will cover all of Baugh’s techniques from beginning to advanced levels. This workshop is limited to 12 in-person students.

Workshop overview:

Day 1 - 10am - 5pm - Baugh will discuss the basics of his personal technique which will include:

  • The properties of charcoal and paper.

  • 7 elements of the visual world. - Understanding the 7 elements will give you the tools you need to not only plan your artwork properly, it will also give you the skills to be able to rescue any artwork from failure and bring it back to your initial desired outcome.

  • Planning properly. - Baugh will discuss a few unique ways to plan your drawing so that there are fewer blocks during the creation of your piece.

  • Tips for gathering the best reference. - Baugh will show you his favorite methods of gathering the best reference for any of your drawing scenes. These methods include live studies and capturing scenes with a camera.

  • Proper tools. - Baugh will cover all of his favorite tools and how they can be used. He will also discuss his studio setup including lighting, palette, easel, reference monitor and all the ways to keep a studio work flow efficient.

  • Proper ways to see your scene. - Knowing how to use tools and plan your artwork is only half of the battle. Students will also learn how to see your subject clearly in order to understand how to translate that into a drawn scene. Baugh will discuss new ways of seeing and understanding light in order to communicate it clearly with your drawing.

  • Many different methods of using your charcoal tools to create a variety of textures.

Lunch break with the class

  • Live Demo - Baugh will do a live painting demo of a portrait.

Day 2 - 10am- 5pm - Students will work with a live model and a live scene under Baugh’s direction.

  • Ways to begin to keep the most control of your scene.

  • Good habits during a drawing session.

  • Creating unique textures in charcoal.

Lunch break with the class

  • How to move through the hardest part of a piece, the middle.

  • One-on-one help with each student during drawing.

Day 3 - 10am- 5pm - Students will continue to work on their drawing under Baugh’s instruction.

  • Proper way to photograph your work for archives, prints, social media and magazines.

Lunch break with the class

  • The business of art. Finding your voice and signature.

  • Ways to stay inspired during painters block.

  • Q&A session

 

Each student will be able to take home their completed painting and studies from the class as well as printed class notes and information.


Materials:

The workshop will take place in Baugh’s studio in Byron Bay Australia. Exact location will be given to students after sign up.
